Final Mission: by Harley Copic
On 8 May 1944, Capt Robert S. Johnson was flying his final mission over Germany.  He was the leading American Ace with 25 kills, but was still one victory shy of equaling the WW I record of Capt. Eddie Richenbacker.  Suddenly, one of the B-17s the 56th Fighter Group was escorting exploded, and a Bf-109 passed below Bob Johnson's Thunderbolt.
In a matter of moments, the 109 was engaged, finally trying to break off the engagement by diving away.  Johnson's Thunderbolt quickly caught the fleeing aircraft, his guns scoring hits all over the German machine.  The closure rate was too quick and he rolled his P-47 over the top of the disintegrating Messerschmitt.  Moments later, kill number 27 also fell under Bob Johnson's guns.  The WW I record had been surpassed!
