A Lancaster of no. 626 Squadron takes evasive action during a raid over Osterfeld in December 1944, as a Messerschmitt Me110 G.4 night-fighter makes a pass beneath the bomber. Both crews are locked in a desperate closequarters fight, acutely aware of each other's presence in their bid to out maneuver each other. The Lancaster, hampered by damage to its port wing and aileron, jinks through the darkness, taking care not to collide with others on the raid, while the Me110 pilot dives away to avoid the stream of tracer from the Lancaster's front turret. The contest could go either way.

Bill Reid,vc Flight Lieutenant	Though seriously injured by gunfire when attacked by German Me110 and Fw190 night-fighter during a night raid over Dusseldorf, Bill Reid pressed on, bombed the target, and somehow got his surviving Lancaster crew safely home. The 25 mission bomber pilot was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Martin Drewes Major	One of the great Luftwaffe night-fighter pilots, between 1941-45 Martin Drewes completed 235 combat missions flying the Me110, and achieved 52 aerial victories. In 1944 he was promoted to command III./NJG1, and by the war end was holder of the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves.
