Legacy by Ronald Wong On August 6th 1945, then
Colonel Paul W. Tibbets Jr. piloted the B-29 Enola Gay on what
would prove to be one of the most momentous flights in history.
as commander of the 509th Composite Group, Col. Tibbets organized,
trained, and led the hand selected crew members who comprised the
world's first atomic bomb wing. Today the legacy of this famous
unit lives on with the newly organized 509th Bomb Wing and today's
successor to the legendary B-29, the B-2 Spirit. It is only
fitting that Gen. Tibbets' grandson, Captain Paul Tibbets IV, is building
on this tradition as a mission pilot flying the B-2 Spirit assigned
to the 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman AFB, Missouri.
