The Bombardment of Algiers
by
George
Chambers
On 27th August 1816, a combined English and Dutch fleet of over
25 ships, under the command of Admiral Lord Exmouth, attacked the North
African city of Algiers. The objective was to destroy the power of the
Barbary Corsairs and to release the Christian Slaves held in captivity.
The bombardment lasted 10 hours and losses on both sides were extremely
high. The operation was a great success and 1,650 enslaved prisoners
were liberated.
