Into the Shadow
by
James Dietz
On May 23rd 1944, Plan 'Buffalo', the Allied offensive to break out of the Anzio Beachhead, was launched against the surrounding German forces. Led by the 1st Armored Division, Allied forces struck out for the railhead north of Cisterna. Continuing the advance the next day, elements of the 1st Armored entered the town of Albano. Here, the crew of a M-4A1 Sherman of the 3rd BN, 1st Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division, contemplate their good fortune as they prepare to continue their advance in support of the 1st Armored Infantry Regiment through the Italian town on May 24th. Just moments before, the infantry 'took out' the crew of the Flak 36, 88mm gun in the background, just prior to the gun being brought to bear on the American tank. Despite this close call, the tankers and supporting infantry consolidate and prepare to move again into the shadow of death as they continue their advance on Rome. Years later, PFC Edward J. Kaminski (the gunner on the tank depicted here) recalled that despite having lost three tanks in action during his 2 ½ years with the 1st AD, he considered this action his closest call.
