Scotch One - Scratch One
by Philip West

The fourth print in the Vietnam Air War Series, a limited edition art print depicts the F-105D Thunderchief of Col. Robert L. Scott, 333rd TFS, 355th TFW, as he scores his MiG-17 kill on March 23, 1967 (Easter Sunday). By this time during the Vietnam Air War, it was the ubiquitous F-4 Phantom II that pretty much had the air-to-air missions over the north, while the poor ole' "Thud" had the tough missions of hauling bombs. It was a rare occasion when the Thud Driver had the chance to tangle with MiG's, because on route Package Six, Speed meant survival and the Thuds rarely had more than a bare minimum of fuel to get to the tankers enroute home. Col. Scott was leading a mission 20 Thuds that day on a strike against a barracks area on the northwest side of Hanoi. Visibility was exceptional, and coming off target, the Thuds were pointed right at the MiG's taking off, ready for a fight. Suddenly a MiG pulled right in front of him. Flying at over 600 knots, and pulling too many G's for a missile shot, Col Scott squeezed the trigger on his Vulcan 20mm cannon. The MiG's wing sheared off and Scott had his kill. Col. Scott's official call sign that day was "Leech 01", but almost everyone in 7th Air Force knew his personal call sign of "Scotch 1 bags a MiG", everyone knew who to credit it to.
