A
Wolfpack Salute
by
Roy Grinnell
As America's top scoring fighter unit of all time, the 56th Fighter
Group boasted some of the highest scoring aces in USAF history. Led by
the Legendary "Hub" Zemke, the 56th soon earned the name "Zemke's Wolfpack"
for the daring and aggressiveness of its members. Pilots such as Col.
Francis "Gabby" Gabreski, and Capt Robert Johnson were the two top scoring
American Aces in the European Theater of Operations, and many other leading
aces of the ETO flew with this unit. In this remarkable painting by noted
Aviation and Western artist Roy Grinnel, 4 aircraft of top scoring aces
of that legendary unit are seen in formation above a group of B-17's "Somewhere
over the Reich".
Depicted in this dramatic image are the P-47's of:
Col. Francis "Gabby" Gabreski: 28 victories
Col. Walker "Bud" Mahurin: 19 victories
Lt. Gen. Jerry Johnson: 16 ½ victories
This fine limited edition print was signed by the three aces at the Yankee
Air Museum 56th Fighter Group Symposium on 4 August 2001.
