What An Anniversary!
7 December 1942

On the first anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, 15 P-39's of the 35th and 36th Fighter Squadrons engaged seven "Val" dive bombers, escorted by two Zeros. One of the pilots on this mission was Lt. George "Wheaties" Welch, the very same pilot who exactly one year earlier, destroyed 4 Japanese planes over the skies of Pearl Harbor while flying a P-40B of the 47th FS. Desperate to make "Ace", Lt Welch finally achieved this lofty status over Milne Bay, New Guinea when he downed one Zero and two Vals, thus becoming the 36th Fighter Squadron's first ace.
