Departure to Destiny
18 May, 1941, the recently commissioned German Battleship KMS Bismarck, and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, departed their base at Gottenhaven. Joining together off Rügen Island at noon of the 19th, they set sale out of the Baltic. On their way out, they pass the submarine U-556 returning from its recent patrol. After a brief stopover at Korsfjord, Norway, both ships will breakout to attack British convoys in the North Atlantic and thus start one of the greatest sea battles in Naval History. Overhead a He 115 floatplane circles over the historic sailing.
