29 January 1951 — the 5th RCT attacked north towards a series of ridgelines on the far side of a wide valley. 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry was ordered to seize the Objective Baker, Hill 475 and Hill 406. 2nd Battalion was ordered to seize Objective Able, Hill 256. 3rd Battalion was in reserve. 1st Battalion fought onto Objective Baker through fierce Chinese resistance and declared it secure at 2110. As morning fog cleared, the 2nd Battalion encountered intense and accurate Chinese mortar and automatic weapons fire.
