![]() Ernst Barkmann, SS Oberscharfuhrer by David Pentland One of Germany's great panzer aces, Ernst Barkmann started as an infantryman during the invasion of Poland where he was wounded and awarded the Iron Cross Second Class. He volunteered to serve in the panzer unit and won his Iron Cross First Class at Kharkov. His unit was re-equipped with the new Panther and in early 1944 his unit, Das Reich, 2nd SS Panzer Regiment, moved to France fighting in Normandy amongst the Bocage. It was here that he won his Knight's Cross. His Panther is shown near St. Lo in his solo engagement against Shermans of an American armored column. Barkmann went on to fight during the Ardennes offensive, and then again on the Eastern Front, then in Austria, finally finishing up as a British POW. He is still alive and lives in Germany.
