Desk Top Models

by Pat Hawkey

As so many of his generation, Pat Hawkey started building plastic model kits at an early age. In 1961, after constant exposure to his dad's model building, Pat, (under the expert tutelage of his father Neal) built his first plastic model kit.  Fueled by occasional trips to nearby Selfridge Air Force Base Air Shows and Open Houses, Pat's fascination in aircraft and models grew. In the early 1980's, Pat began to do contract work for one of the major mahogany model distributors.  Essentially, Pat's job was to build desk top models from plastic kits of requested subjects not available in wood. The end product "looked" like a slick and simple mahogany model. It wasn't long after that Pat began to wonder "What if the public had the option to buy a desk top model that looked like the "real" airplane instead of the clunky mass produced wooden object?"

As he became more involved in his hobby, his talent and attention to detail became noticed as he displayed his works in Detroit area hobby shops. Soon, Pat found that there was a market out there for quality models as more and more individuals requested commissioned models.  Since 1986, Hawx Planes has delivered over 300 "Serious" model airplanes that have been commissioned and delivered to collectors, enthusiasts, pilots and aircrew all over the country. The attention to detail as well as superb workmanship in each of Pat's models has created such a demand for his work, that Pat was able to turn an avocation in to a full time business in 1989.  In addition to producing these fine replicas, Pat has written numerous articles on plastic modeling that were published in such prestigious modeling magazines such as "Fine Scale Modeler" here in the US and "Replica" in Japan.
